Meet the Governors

GOVERNORS

Welcome to the Governors’ page of Telford Junior School website.   Here you will find photos of the governors and some information about us, and our particular responsibilities (Word document below).

Our role is often described as being a ‘Critical Friend’ as we advise and support the Leadership Team in strategic issues relating to the school.   We work alongside the Head Teacher to produce the School Development Plan which identifies aspects of the school which will be improved in the coming year.  This includes areas of the curriculum which may need updating in some way or staff to be trained in a new teaching technique for example, and parts of the building in need of attention.  Over the year we receive a report each term on progress against this plan, and work with the staff to ensure it is completed and standards improved as a result.

Our Full Governing Body Meetings take place four times a year.   In November we usually meet after school to talk informally with the staff before beginning our meeting.   This gives the opportunity to meet any new members of staff and for them to meet us too.   There are three staff governors in addition to Mr Siviter who is automatically a member of the Governing Body; they are:  Mrs Sarah Powell, Mrs Katy Robbins and Mr Jonathan Fox.

Our main Spring Term meeting is in February, but we then meet again in March to discuss and approve the school Budget.  Our Summer Term meeting is usually in June.

We also have two standing committees which meet each term, or more frequently if necessary.  The Curriculum and Standards Committee reviews curriculum policies and seeks to ensure that subject teaching remains up to date and that the curriculum is accessible to all pupils.   They also review annual test results, holding the school to account in the on-going drive for improvement of standards.   The Resources Committee works with Mr Siviter to put together a balanced budget each year, and has responsibility for building and maintenance projects and Health and Safety.  Both committees report back to the full Governing Body meetings to ratify their decisions.

Many of us are Link Governors assigned to work with the teacher who co-ordinates a particular subject, usually a subject of particular interest to us, or which relates to our work expertise.  These Governors meet with subject co-ordinators to talk through any issues related to their subject, act as a sounding board and can assist with reviewing or re-working Policy documents.

Governors attend Open Afternoons, Parents’ Evenings and other school events and are available if you would like to talk with us.  We are likely to be in the hall wearing our name badges.
