Butterfly Garden
The idea and the inspiration to create a Butterfly Garden on the school site came from one of our parents, Mrs. Ali Willers. Mrs. Willers drew up the necessary scale drawings and put together a bid for Breathing Spaces funding, in the form of a Big Lottery Grant. The school was successful in receiving a Big Lottery grant of £10,000. In addition, the Parents’ Association raised £3,000 towards the project. With further smaller grants, a total of £15,000 was raised to see the project through.
Another parent, Mr. Birch, and his construction company undertook the landscaping and laying of the ornate pathway, which provides the central feature of the garden. This took place in rather soggy conditions during the winter months, preparing the site to receive £6,000 worth of plants kindly donated by another parent.
During the last week of the Spring Term an army of children, staff and parent volunteers undertook the planting operation. Mrs. Willers and another parent, Mrs. Liz Cole lent their horticultural expertise in guiding the planting, watering and laying of huge volume of organic mulch! They put in an incredible number of hours of hard labour in leading the planting exercise, as did two members of staff, Mr. Matthew Watson and Mrs. Alison Cox (who marshalled each class in turn to contribute towards the planting).
“The Butterfly Garden is an outstanding resource, which the school will benefit from for many years to come. We are very grateful for the hard work and expertise provided by all the parents, children and staff involved in the project.” (Richard Siviter, Head Teacher)
Comic Relief 2009
We raised £504 for Comic Relief this year. Children dressed in red, bringing in a donation for the event. At playtime, members of the School Council organised stalls and games for the rest of the school, to help with the fund-raising. A great day was had by all !
Children in Need
The children, parents and staff at Telford Junior Schhol raised over £450 for Children in Need, through cake sales, games and wearing silly hats (see below).
Steel Pan Academy
Some of our Year 5 and 6 children are receiving tuition from the Steel Pan Academy. Recently, they performed for the school during an assembly. What an excellent sound they managed to achieve after so few lessons!
European Day of Languages
Wednesday 26th September was European Day of Languages. To celebrate Telford Junior School's commitment to developing the children's awareness of modern foreign languages throughout the school, with the introduction of French in each year group, we held a French Day in school. The children came dressed in the colours of Le Tricolore, we shared croissant and pain au chocolat at breaktime, the children undertook a variety of fun French activities in their classrooms and County Catering provided a French menu at lunchtime. Our kitchen staff entered in to the spirit of the occasion, dressing accordingly and decorating their servery in bleu, blanc et rouge!
Have a look at the photographs Oliver of 5M took to mark the day.
